Lush green grass after a winter of feeding hay is a welcome sight. Although it's exciting to finally turn cows out to pasture, there are a few concerns to keep in mind. Sure, the fences will need to be checked and mended, and the grass stand will need to be evaluated. But do you have a plan to prevent grass tetany?

Grass tetany is a serious condition caused by low magnesium levels in the blood.  The onset of symptoms is often rapid due to blood magnesium levels dropping abruptly.  Symptoms include staggering, convulsions, excitability, and twitching, and it can result in death. Lactating cows are especially susceptible to grass tetany. Cattle grazing on cool-season grasses are also more susceptible, as varieties of grasses like brome and fescue are naturally lower in magnesium. Grazing on small grains and cover crops can also increase the risk for grass tetany.  These forages are high in potassium which can interfere with magnesium absorption.

Feeding a high "mag" mineral supplement is a great way to prevent grass tetany. These supplements contain high levels of magnesium, usually around 12-14%. Magnesium oxide is the mag ingredient of choice due to its bioavailability. However, these high mag supplements can be unpalatable. A cow will need to eat about four ounces of magnesium free choice mineral per day to be truly effective against grass tetany. If the supplement tastes bad, their chance of developing tetany grows.

The Cow Country Mag Mineral Tub from Nelson Tubs is highly palatable, weather resistant and it's a game-changer for your pasture management. They are convenient, saving both time and labor while ensuring your cows have access to the necessary nutrients. The Cow Country Mag Mineral Tub is consumed by the cattle's licking action, and its consistent nutrient density and hardness make it naturally self-limiting. With typical intakes providing 10 to 20 grams of magnesium per head per day, the Cow Country Mag Mineral Tub offers a more consistent daily intake than conventional free choice loose mineral.

This spring, prepare for grass tetany with a supplement that your cattle will actually want to eat.
